Brisbane mini-break

me

Mini-break, staycation, weekend getaway … call it what you will but I will say this, a couple of days of decadence helps a post-holiday slump like nobody’s business. Now back to business. My little Brissie escape began with a bit of a bake-off. After all, a commute calls for a snack to suit.

Before I knew it, the clock had struck midnight and there wasn’t a sound from the pavement … well actually it was six at night and there was plenty of sound from the pavement at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. We were all there to see Cats. Admittedly, I’d already seen it when I was a mere kitten but this time round I was equally smitten. We chose balcony seats and I’m so glad we did. From our elevated pew, we had a good view. We were able to see every nook and crany of that magnificent set, not to mention the artwork painted on the stage — all details lost on me first time round. Delta Goodrem as Grizabella was purr-fect (sorry, I couldn’t resist). Five stars. The show wraps on Sunday so you’ll have to hotfoot it to get there before it’s curtains for Brissie’s season.

Had a wander along South Bank and loved the look of this wee watering hole. My eyes said yes but, alas, we ran out of time. All that humdrum aside, doesn’t this place look oh so warm and welcoming?

Sangria Bar

I have to say South Bank was really showing off. The weather was sublime — cue cool breeze and dappled sunlight. Hats off to the bright spark who configured a little bay of beach chairs under a beautiful shady tree. What a perfect spot to rest one’s bott.

Warning Will Robinson, this post is not sponsored. I do, however, want to give a shout-out to the guys and gals at Rydges South Bank. They made our stay so, so pleasant. Great service, yummy cuppas and cakes and thoughtful inclusions like late check-out and lovely manners. What more could a gal want? To be honest, I want another weekend just like this one.

Ok, so I’ve done Brissie. Where should my next mini-break be?

I really want a mini break! I had one a year ago and it was so invaluable to me. But right now I have vet bills, car rego and electricity on my plate so maybe in a month or so haha.

Why oh why do all the bills come at once and the mini breaks aren’t so frequent? Hope you get to skew the ledger your way sometime soon Vanessa. Meanwhile, have a good weekend.

Thanks Leanne. I only make it a couple of times a year. It’s oh so decadent but oh so good.

  • Sometimes it is the mini break that helps stop a massive break in your life. I know for me I need things like this so I can cope with every day life.

Oh Raychael, don’t tempt me. I’d love that! Haven’t visited in years and years, and last trip was all work and no play. Hope you’re well and 2016 is treating you kindly. x

Oooooh! How lovely! I am going through post holiday blues too! As soon as we arrived back at Sydney Airport I said to my husband, “Right. Let’s start planning a camping trip!”
I’d love to see Cats (I saw it when I was a wee kitten too…meow!) I bet Delta Goodrem was awesome! x

Oh Grace, I know the feeling. Just unpack and re-pack, I say! If you hop a flight now, you can catch Cats this weekend … just a thought. x

  • The hubby and I made this same trip, staying also at Rydges a couple of days before Christmas to see Les Miserables, it was wonderful to get away. We love staying at Rydges Southbank, the staff are amazing.

Oh Renee, she’ll love it. Let her know you’ll have to see it on Broadway or West End. That can be arranged, right?

Sounds lovely! I haven’t seen Cats for a long time. Glad to hear the latest production was good. I’m not a big Delta fan but she does have an amazing voice so I’m sure she did herself proud. It’s great to ‘rediscover’ a familiar city. South Bank certainly has a lot going for it these days 🙂

We stayed at the same Rydges for our 10th wedding anniversary, even though we live in Brisbane it was a great place to go for a mini-break, exploring South Bank and the markets 🙂

Oh a belated “happy anniversary” to you! Yes, it’s such a great location – so central to everything. I even managed to duck over to the CBD to pick up a new charger for my computer.

  • I have to second Rydges South Bank. Although I’m from 30 mins outside Brisbane, we stayed there once for a Christmas party and it was lovely. Glad you enjoyed Brisbane.
