Winter greens

It was a balmy summer’s day when our eyes first met across a crowded room…stay with me, I promise I’m not moonlighting as a romance writer.

The setting was my favourite op shop. The object of my affection was this green weather-beaten jacket. Sure it was on the smallish side and its arms weren’t quite as long as mine but, as you know, opposites attract.

Admittedly, it did seem rather bold slipping into its warm embrace in mid-summer when the temperature was nudging 35 degrees. What can I say, the heart wants what the heart wants. Yes it was crazy and wild and reckless but I knew if I committed to this jacket in the height of summer, we’d be back together in a few short months.

So here we are. Reunited and yes it feels so good. I’ll admit it’s a tad tight. Let’s just say nothing’s going to come between us, especially not a thick woolly jumper.

Our relationship is multi-layered. The more time we spend together, the more the cracks are beginning to show. The belt’s a bit worse for the wear but I don’t care. That’s the beauty of preloved apparel; it’s lived a little.

To be honest, I’m not sure how many winters we’ll stay together but one thing’s for certain. My love of vintage winters is evergreen.

What’s your favourite winter wardrobe staple?

  • With 87 (and counting) jackets, you could probably say I’m a jacket kind of gal. Your jacket was the first thing I noticed in the photo. My favourite one is a tad too tight in the arms at the moment but I have no plans to part with it.

That’s an impressive stat Raychael. I’m not going to admit my scarf statistics but let’s just say I could probably string them over to you in Perth (and back). Yikes!

Merilyn, I like the sound of your Mum’s taste. Another green jacket aficionado! How lovely. I must confess that deck actually belongs to my brother but what a coincidence your daughter has something similar. Love those sprawling outdoor areas; aren’t they just ideal for long lunches and cuppas and cakes? Hope it’s jacket weather for you too today xx

  • Even if you only get this winters wear it has been worth the pleasure of purchasing it and seriously how many times can your friends and family see you in the same jacket – so great buy!

Oh Sally, I like your way of thinking!

  • I love finding a must have item like this. Who cares if it only lasts one season, it makes you happy.

Oh Jodi, I’m a crazy scarf gal in rain, hail or shine. I have them in lightweight summer fabrics and heavy duty woollen ones too. I’m a tad obsessed with them!

My favourite colour!! I can understand you needing to have it then and there. Shame it’s starting to crack though. Hmm my winter staple is opaque tights 🙂 #teamIBOT

I have a theory about opaque tights…every winter I buy new ones but can never find them the following year. I suspect they self destruct at the end of the season!

I want all the jackets! I’ve got a couple, but I’m not going to lie, I want more. I found a burgundy one the other day that I was crushing on.
I also love boots. You can never have enough boots right?

Recently I read that burgundy is THE colour this winter. On this basis, I think that jacket deserves closer consideration! As for those boots, I’ve had them forever. Bought them secondhand and then had them resoled 10,000 times. Last time I saw my repair man he told me I’m crazy to be spending so much on these old hoofs but I love them to bits and bobs so I can’t say no to more repairs.

  • Sounds like love at first sight! When you spot a cool jacket like that you need to grab it with both hands straight away. I hope you two are very happy together. I’m a scarf girl so my multitude of scarves and wraps and trusty denim jeans help me survive winter!

Thanks Tash, glad to hear you’re a scarf and wrap gal too. Love me some winter layering. Hope you’re having a warm and wonderful week.

  • I really miss having great op shops around. When I lived closer to the CBD I was surrounded by a treasure trove of great op-shopping.
My winter wardrobe staple(s) (being in Melbourne) is/are the standard BLACK items in my wardrobe. I have my eyes peeled for a few colourful bits and pieces at the moment.

I used to live in Melbourne and I still love me some black too. Sorry to hear you don’t have any good op shops close by. I have to say, it really is my preferred form of relaxation..a good potter is good for the heart and head, I reckon.
